Even Splits or Negative Splits? The McMillan Approach
Most runners know they shouldn’t go out too fast. Fewer understand exactly why — or how much it costs them.
Pacing is an energy management and muscle protection problem. Your glycogen stores are finite. The faster you run early, the faster you burn through them — and the interest rate on that debt compounds the longer the race goes on. Going out too hard in mile 6 doesn’t just slow you down at mile 22. It can end your race entirely. And running fast for long periods causes microtears in the muscle fibers. Run too fast too early and fatigue-causing muscle damage is accelerated.
Even splits — holding identical pace from start to finish — is energetically efficient and achievable. On a flat course with good conditions, a well-executed even split produces a strong time. It’s a perfectly valid strategy, and it’s what many runners should aim for until they have enough race experience to feel confident managing effort over 26.2 miles.
My preference for most marathon courses, and what the data from elite performances and world records consistently shows, is a slight negative split: run the second half of the marathon a few seconds per mile faster than the first. Not dramatically faster. The difference is almost invisible early in the race — it’s patience, not slowness. What it buys you is a finishing surge when every other runner around you is fading.
Here’s how I think about it: your body is an engine, and every engine has an optimal RPM range. In a marathon, that range is narrower than most runners realize. Push above it early — even slightly — and you’re burning fuel you can’t replace and fatiguing your legs. Stay in range through 20 miles and you’ll have something left when it counts.
The runners who come through the second half strong aren’t a different breed. They’re the ones who resisted the crowd at mile 1 and trusted the plan.

What Actually Determines Marathon Success
A lot of runners train hard for cardiovascular fitness and wonder why they still hit the wall. The truth is that marathons aren’t primarily won or lost in your lungs — they’re determined by your legs, your fueling, your brain, and how well you protect all three with smart pacing. Here’s what I focus on with every marathon athlete I coach.
Leg Durability
The average marathoner takes 35,000 to 45,000 steps during the race. That’s not a cardiovascular event — it’s a structural one. Runners with excellent aerobic fitness still hit the wall when their legs can’t absorb the pounding of the final miles. Building legs that hold their form and efficiency through mile 26 is the first priority in any smart marathon plan, and it’s why my training programs emphasize consistent mileage, long runs, and dedicated leg strengthening work like the Marathon Legs program.
Fueling
Your blood glucose (aka sugar) levels and your carbohydrate stores — glycogen — begin depleting after roughly two hours of running at marathon pace. Eliud Kipchoge finishes in under two hours. Most of us take considerably longer. That means fueling during the race isn’t optional, and it can’t be improvised on race day. You need a strategy you’ve practiced in training until it’s automatic. Brain Training
Your brain monitors everything — heart rate, temperature, muscle fatigue, energy availability. When it detects too much stress, it responds by amplifying fatigue signals and, in extreme cases, reducing power to your working muscles to protect you. The irony is that the brain responds to perceived threat, not just actual damage. Train it right and your brain becomes an ally. Train it wrong — by going out too fast, skipping long runs, or neglecting race-specific suffering — and it becomes the thing that makes you walk at mile 20 (km 32).
My fast finish long runs are specifically designed to expose the brain, in small doses, to the fatigue it will face in the race. By the time you reach the start line, the suffering isn’t a surprise — it’s familiar territory.
Proper Pacing
We covered this in depth above. The short version: even splits or a slight negative split, executed with discipline and patience in the first half. Something many runners are surprised to discover is that later in the marathon, you have to ramp up your mental intensity considerably just to maintain pace — not to run faster.
