Frequently Asked Questions

The Runner’s Strength Project requires minimal equipment. The main tool you should consider is a set of kettlebells—light, medium, and heavy. Kettlebells are one of the most perfectly designed strength training tools for runners and are available at most sporting goods stores or Amazon.

You’ll do 2-3 strength training sessions each week, scheduled on your easy or non-running days. For example, if you do quality running on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, you might strength train on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

You start with PR Strength and Core Crusher 1 in Phase 1 (weeks 1-4), gradually add Ferocious Fitness and Core Crusher 2 in Phase 2 (weeks 5-8), then incorporate Olympic Development Strength in Phase 3 (weeks 9-12). Each phase builds on the previous one to safely increase your strength.

No experience necessary. Coach Mat designed this system to guide you from foundational exercises to advanced strength work. The progressive structure ensures you build strength safely, starting at an appropriate level and advancing as your body adapts.

You get: Dynamic Warm-Up, Core Crusher 1, PR Strength, Core Crusher 2, Ferocious Fitness, Olympic Development Strength, plus two bonus programs—Vacation Travel Workout and IT Band Quick Fix.

Workouts are time-efficient and designed for busy runners. You’ll start with the 5-minute Dynamic Warm-Up, then complete your main routine. Total session time varies by phase but Coach Mat designed these to deliver maximum benefit without spending hours in the gym.

Mathew Nark is a McMillan Certified Running Coach and Strongfirst Level 2 kettlebell instructor, FMS advanced, and NASM Certified Personal Trainer. He uniquely combines accomplished running coaching with innovative strength training, working with everyone from beginning runners to Olympic Trials competitors.

Absolutely. The system is designed to complement your run training, not interfere with it. Schedule sessions on easy or non-running days, and listen to your body to ensure you’re recovering properly between workouts.
